Snow falls through this wolf as well as around it. The artwork is a double exposure: one animal walking in profile with its mouth slightly open, and inside the pale coat a full winter forest of dark conifers along a ridge, a soft mountain line rising over the shoulders and back.
The palette runs from bone white to cool grey with almost nothing else in it. Edges are painterly rather than sharp, so the legs and muzzle dissolve into flurries of white specks, and a loose grey wash beneath the paws works as both shadow and drifted snow. The whole scene is one wolf, the trees it carries and the weather moving through both.
Arctic wolves wear the palest coats of the species. Their warmth comes from a dense underlayer that traps air beneath long guard hairs, and their shorter ears and compact muzzles give the cold less to work with than the longer faces of wolves further south.
