A second wolf stands close at its side, and a further wolf head looks out from each sleeve. The pines are the anchor. They are painted as almost solid dark shapes against the brightest orange in the sky, and that division is what the eye picks up first from across a room. The wolves work the other way round, pale cream and soft grey through the face, chest and shoulders, set against the dark trees behind them, so each animal reads clearly long before any of the fur detail becomes visible. Water along the hem catches the last of the light and repeats the scene in reflection.
