Black and white are both genuine wolf colours, and the black is the stranger of the two. It traces back to a single gene variant that entered North American wolf populations from domestic dogs thousands of years ago, and it shows up far more often in forested country than out on open tundra, where pale coats hold the ground.
So the choice between the two here is really a choice between two kinds of landscape: timber and shadow, or snow and long winter light.

Behind it hangs a dark hoop backed by rust and ochre splashes, black tendrils curl out from it, and blue tipped feathers trail across the lower part of the scene. On the white cloth shown here the whole thing floats on the pale ground with no border around it.
