A white wolf stood on a snow-covered rock, head turned, tail streaming out behind it. Behind it an open starfield and a very large crescent moon, and at its throat a beaded band with an ornament hanging from it.
The scene is invented rather than observed, which puts this in a different category from the landscapes. That suits people who want some atmosphere in an image and frustrates people who want a straight wildlife photograph.
The whole picture runs blue, deep in the sky and pale in the snow, and that is worth planning for. Dark canvases absorb light rather than reflecting it, so a room that is already dim will get dimmer.
They also mirror. Hung directly opposite a window, a dark surface picks up glare through the middle of the day and the image disappears behind it.
Put it on a wall perpendicular to the light source, not facing it. That single decision matters more here than the size does.
A bedroom, a study, a room used mostly in the evening. Somewhere the dark is an asset rather than a problem.
