Turquoise beads sit at the four points of the hoop, and inside it the artwork opens onto a winter evening: one pale wolf howling from a rock, three more standing in the snow below, mountains behind them under a sky going pink and blue at once. Birds cross the middle distance. The circle is set on a warm sand coloured ground, so it reads as a window rather than a badge.
Below the frame hang long feathers tipped in black, arrowhead pendants, strings of beads and a rose coloured crystal wrapped at the centre. The hoop is bound in brown, with small painted markers set around the rim.
The dreamcatcher is Ojibwe, called asabikeshiinh, the spider. In the old telling Asibikaashi, Spider Woman, watched over the children of the nation. When the people spread far across the land she could not reach every cradle, so mothers and grandmothers wove webs on small willow hoops and hung them where the children slept. The big decorative hoops most of us know today came much later, once the design travelled beyond the Great Lakes. Credit for it belongs with the Ojibwe.
