Ancestral is the right word here, and not only as a style note. Several cultures traced their actual descent to a wolf rather than merely admiring one.
Rome had the Lupa, the she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus, and put her on its coinage. The Turkic origin legend has a grey she-wolf, Asena, who shelters the last survivor of a slaughtered people and bears the children who become the Ashina line. The Secret History of the Mongols opens with Borte Chino, the grey wolf, as the first ancestor.
These are separate traditions across an enormous span of territory, and they arrived at the same claim independently.
Because the claim is about what kind of people you are, not how fierce. A wolf is a family animal that survives by staying together and covering distance.
