Wolf Sticker Howling at the Moon

One wolf, one ridge, one circle

This is a true silhouette, so the whole character is carried by the outline: the heavy ruff at the neck, the long brush of the tail swept out behind, the forelegs braced on a rocky outcrop. The head is tipped fully back with the jaw open, and the muzzle points up into clear moonlight with the pale disc still wide above it. The circle is cut so generously that it runs out through the left side of the black panel, giving the frame an open edge on that side.

Sound before sight

Howling travels because of how it is built. The note is low, steady and long, which lets it roll across open ground instead of scattering. When several wolves join in, they rarely settle on the same pitch, and the shifting harmonies can make a small group sound like a much larger one. Cold, still night air carries every part of it further, which is a good part of why the sound belongs to darkness and the moon in our imagination rather than to the middle of the day.
