That is doing more work than it appears. An animal alone in a frame has no size at all; put a known object beside it and the scale locks in.
It matters here because people get wolves wrong in one direction, consistently. Folklore has built something closer to a bear.
A grey wolf stands roughly as tall at the shoulder as a large German Shepherd and typically weighs between thirty and forty-five kilograms. Substantial, not enormous.
The legs are longer and the chest narrower than a dog's, which is a distance-covering build rather than a fighting one. Most of the bulk in a winter photograph is coat.
Knowing that does not make the animal less impressive. It makes it a real thing rather than a monster.
