One pale blue eye sits at the centre of this photograph, in a face turned fully to the side. The wolf is almost white, cream through the cheek and muzzle, with soft grey shading around the socket and a dark ear folded back against the light. The snow behind is blown out to a haze, so the profile carries the whole frame on its own.
Wolf pups are born blue eyed, and over the first months the colour usually turns to gold or amber. An adult that keeps the blue generally has husky somewhere in the line, which is why the trait turns up so often in pictures taken in the far north. Whatever the ancestry, blue is a cold colour, and against this pale ground it holds the eye better than any warmer one would.
