Wolves pile together in deep snow in this photograph, muzzles overlapping, while one of them stretches its tongue up to lick the mouth of the wolf beside it. Flakes hang in the air and catch on the fur, a raised paw shows its pads above the drift, and the picture is in full colour: tan, grey and cream coats against white ground.
The gesture at the centre of this picture has a job behind it. Pups lick at the muzzles of adults coming back from a hunt, and the licking prompts the adult to bring food back up for them. Wolves never drop the habit. In a grown pack the same movement works as a greeting after a separation, and as a way of settling things down again after friction.
Deep snow is where a pack shows its shape most clearly. Travelling wolves move in single file, the lead animal breaking trail while the rest place their feet in the same holes.
