Steam rising from the animal's mouth is what makes this image cold. Without it you have a wolf and some snow; with it the temperature becomes a fact rather than a suggestion.
Small details carry more weight than the big ones in realistic work, and this is a clean example of it.
The comfort is not artistic licence. A wolf can rest in the open at forty below by curling up and covering its nose with its tail, breathing warmed air through the fur.
The feet are the better trick. Blood heading down to the paws runs alongside blood returning, warming it on the way back so heat never reaches the ground, and the pads sit just above freezing on ice indefinitely. The same arrangement turns up in Arctic birds and foxes.
