Two thousand years of the same pairing

Putting these two animals together is not a new idea. It is one of the oldest rhetorical images in European culture, and it has almost always been a warning.

A wolf in sheep's clothing appears in the Gospel of Matthew, and a version of it turns up among the fables attributed to Aesop. The wolf and the lamb is a fable in its own right, in which the wolf invents a series of excuses to justify eating the lamb and then eats it anyway, having established that the excuses were never the point.

Every use of the pairing has been about deception or about power dressed up as fairness.

Which makes this design a reversal

Here the two are together and nothing bad is happening. That is quietly subversive, and it is why the image reads as protective rather than threatening.

It works as a children's room piece for the same reason.
