Older copy sold this as a symbol of dominance and strength. That reading comes from a study of unrelated captive wolves penned together in the 1940s, and the researcher who popularised the word alpha spent years asking people to stop using it.

What a wild pack actually is: a breeding pair and their offspring from the last few years. The two adults lead because they are the parents, not because they defeated anyone. There is no tournament and no ranking to climb.

So a picture of two wolves at the head of a family is a domestic image, not a hierarchical one. That is a considerably better thing to have in a room you live in.
