Three wolves appear in this all over print, and only the smallest of them is making a sound. Two pale blue heads fill the shoulders and sleeves, turned in towards each other, and far below them a single white wolf stands on a lit shelf of rock with its muzzle raised. A full moon, a scatter of stars and a dark treeline of pines sit behind them all.
High ground is the right choice for a caller. A howl launched from a rise clears the treetops and keeps going, while the same note given inside thick timber is soaked up within a fraction of the distance. Cold air, open country and a windless night each add to how far it travels.
A lone howl is usually a contact call, a question about where everyone else has got to. Wolves separated during a hunt trade notes back and forth until they gather again, and they know one another by voice, so a reply carries identity as well as direction.
