The pendant is a wolf's head worked in steel, and the ears, ruff and border are all dense knotwork in the same grey metal.
The one exception is the eyes. They are set green, dark towards the top and brightening towards the lower lid, and they are the only part of the piece that is not the colour of the metal.
It is a small amount of colour on a busy design, which is why the thing reads as a face rather than as pattern. The eyes are where you look first, and the knotwork resolves around them.
Practically, that is the strongest accent you can put on a metal pendant. Steel is neutral and cool; one small point of colour gives the eye somewhere to land and keeps the design from reading as flat.
One accent colour is the right number. Two competing colours on a small object is one too many.
