Every link in this band is built the way a drive chain is built. Two flat side plates, a barrel roller running between them, a capped pin holding the pair together. What changes is the cargo: sculpted wolf heads set into the run at...

A large ginger pompom crowns this ribbed grey hat, its long fibres splaying out wider than the crown it is fixed to, with darker tips scattered through them. On the turned-up cuff sits a small square patch, embroidered with a wolf looking straight ahead,...

Gleipnir, the fetter that finally held Fenrir, was spun by dwarves from six impossible things: the sound of a cat stepping, the roots of a mountain, the beard of a woman, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish and the spittle...

The panel here is cut to follow the animal's own outline, so its border doubles as part of the drawing. That ridge of raised hair along the top of the head is the edge of the acrylic itself, and the sweep of the neck...

A hoop, a web and two feathers The dreamcatcher comes from the Ojibwe, a hoop strung with a woven web and hung above a sleeping place. Here it hangs below a wolf's head in profile, the web engraved as a fine radiating lattice with...

Peoples who claimed a wolf as an ancestorAncestral is the right word here, and not only as a style note. Several cultures traced their actual descent to a wolf rather than merely admiring one.Rome had the Lupa, the she-wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus,...

Why gold and silver and nothing elseEvery culture that had access to metals arrived at the same two for ornament. That is not fashion agreeing across the whole world by coincidence. It is chemistry. Almost every metal reacts with air and moisture and destroys itself:...

Two upright ears stand at the top of this hood, dark panelled on the inside, and the rest of it, scarf tails included, is worked in a deep coffee brown faux fur with a long shaggy pile. The colour is not flat: the tips...

The head is an old wolf and cut to look it. Deep lines run back from the muzzle and ring both eyes, the ears stand up pointed on either side of the face, and the recesses are darkened so the wrinkles stand out against...

Two animals on one bandA wolf and a dragon share a single round medallion face, the dragon in flight across the top and the wolf standing in profile beneath it, which is a considerably harder thing to execute than a single head. Two creatures...

The wolf as guardianEuropean tradition spent centuries casting the wolf as the thing you needed protecting from. Almost everywhere else it is the opposite: a guardian at the edge of the camp, a teacher, an animal that keeps watch and does not abandon its...

Tartan, claws and fur cuffs Three red claw marks are torn across the front of the black top, and the rest of the costume answers them. The red tartan skirt is cut into uneven points at the hem with loose threads left hanging, and...

Two wolves, one shacklePaired animal heads facing each other across a ring turn up again and again in old metalwork, and this bracelet takes the arrangement literally. Two cast wolf heads finish the rope ends, muzzles forward, and a bow shackle with a screw...

Knotwork rather than a portraitCeltic design works by interlacing rather than by depiction, and this ring follows that. Two clawed paws curl round the finger with their ends overlapping rather than meeting, and knotwork fills the back of each paw while the claws are...

Arctic wolves keep a white coat the year round, while grey wolves further south only pale as the winter undercoat comes in. The animal on this hoodie belongs to the first group. A single wolf is photographed head on in silver, white and pale...
