Night sky and a snow ledgeA white wolf stood on a snow-covered rock, head turned, tail streaming out behind it. Behind it an open starfield and a very large crescent moon, and at its throat a beaded band with an ornament hanging from it.The...

Cropped to the eyesNo landscape, no body, no context. Just the eyes at close range, split across five panels with one eye either side of the muzzle, which is about as concentrated as an image gets.Tight crops work because they remove the choice of...

Play, not conflictTwo wolves messing about on snow. It is a rare subject in wolf art, which runs heavily toward menace, and that alone makes it worth having. It is also accurate. Adult wolves play throughout their lives, not just as pups, with bows and...

What this is, honestlyA white wolf beside a Native American woman, painted in a romantic style rather than a documentary one.It is worth being clear about that. The image belongs to a long tradition of European and American artists imagining Indigenous life rather than...

Head on is the hardest look to ignoreThe wolf is turned to face you, ears back, muzzle wrinkled and the teeth showing, with snow falling through a cold blue-grey dark behind it. Nothing subtle survives in the same room as that. The pale grey and...

The wolf that was never driven outEvery other wolf in this collection has a history of persecution behind it. The Arctic wolf largely does not, for the plain reason that almost nobody lives in its range. It is one of the few large predators on...

A black wolf in bright snowThe setting does most of the work. A dark animal against fresh snow and pale birch trunks has about as much tonal separation as a photograph can give you, so the outline stays clean and the coat keeps the...

Almost nobody sees this sky any moreThe star field here is not exaggerated. It is roughly what the sky looks like without artificial light, and it is a view that has quietly disappeared from most of the world.A global survey of night sky brightness...

The ridge is not artistic licenceWolves really do travel high ground, and there is nothing romantic in the reason. Ridgelines, frozen rivers, game trails and, unhelpfully for them, human roads all offer the same thing: firm footing and no obstacles.A wolf covers serious distance...

The tree tells you how big the wolf isThat is doing more work than it appears. An animal alone in a frame has no size at all; put a known object beside it and the scale locks in.It matters here because people get wolves...

Let it choose the paletteA piece this loud is not going to fit into an existing scheme. It will decide one, and the useful move is to let it.Pick two colours out of the canvas and repeat them elsewhere in the room, in cushions,...

Fantasy, and openly soA girl's face fills the centre panel, pale and freckled beneath a beaded crown of feathers and roses, her cream and magenta hair spilling across a background of deep red, teal and gold. A howling wolf stands on each of the...

The colour choice is physiologically correctBlack, white and a bright turquoise green, with the wolf lit pale against the dark and no other colour let into the picture. The glow is a stylistic decision; the choice of hue is closer to documentary.By moonlight your...

Panels read as time passingMost multi-panel work is one picture cut into pieces. This is doing something better than that.A pack strung out across separate panels does not read as a frozen instant. The eye moves from one panel to the next in sequence,...

The safest choice in the rangeIf you are buying one painting and you are not certain about the room, buy this one.A single wolf walks out of a bank of pale stones towards you, with a fallen bare tree lying behind it, flat water...
