Alpha is the most repeated wolf fact there is, and it does not describe wild wolves at all.
It came from a 1940s study of unrelated captive animals penned together, which produced exactly the ranked aggression you would expect from strangers with nowhere to go. The researcher who popularised the term, David Mech, spent much of his later career trying to retract it, to the point of asking his own publisher to stop reprinting the book.
A pair of white wolves close together in the snow, one with its head raised and its muzzle almost touching the other, which is closer to the truth than the title suggests. A wild pack is a family: two parents and their young of the last few years. There is no tournament and no fighting for rank, because you do not fight your way to the top of your own family.
The pair leads because they are the parents. That is a better subject for a wall than dominance was.
