January's full moon is traditionally called the Wolf Moon in English, and the name has stuck for centuries.
The usual explanation is that wolves howl more in midwinter. They do, though not from hunger as the folklore claims. Late January is the breeding season, and howling rises because pairs are forming and territories are being defended, not because anything is starving.
So the name is accurate and the reason behind it is not. That is true of most wolf folklore.
Four exact sizes rather than Small and Large, which removes the guesswork entirely. 75x100cm is a genuinely large canvas and needs a wall to match.
It is watercolour on a plain white ground: an inked head thrown back in a howl, a blue moon behind it, and the body breaking up into starfield and loose droplets of paint. On a white or pale wall it reads as ink on paper rather than as a block of colour.
Our article on why wolves howl covers the rest. See the painting size chart and the wolf painting collection.
