White coats belong to the far north. Arctic wolves on Ellesmere Island and the northern edge of Greenland stay white the year round, while further south a wolf can be grey, buff, black or almost any mix of the three. The scene under this dome puts a white one on a rocky rise, head thrown back, with a large full moon behind and above the raised muzzle.
The picture sits inside a silver ring behind a round, raised cover, and the curve of it catches a bright streak of light across the upper left of the disc. The palette runs from charcoal cloud to bare white, with one patch of green leaf at the lower left to hold the eye. The raised muzzle is true to life: wolves tip their heads back to lift a howl clear of the ground, which carries the sound for miles across open country.
In the dark the disc glows green. The second view in the photograph shows the wolf, the rock and the moon returning as a soft green circle once the light goes.
