Standing into the weather

The wolf is out in the open on a sunlit snow slope, standing square and facing straight down the frame rather than moving off, and that posture is the whole piece.

It is also accurate. Arctic wolves live where temperatures reach sixty below, on territories that can run to three thousand square kilometres because prey is so thinly spread. A bright piece for a dark room

Snow and pale fur carry a lot of light. In a north facing room, or anywhere short of daylight, this lifts the wall rather than deepening it.

The same quality makes it harder work opposite a bright window, where glare competes with the pale ground.
